The environment ministry official said that this could cause large-scale damage to crops, although states are issuing alerts about this at their level, but farmers and people are facing a lot of problems with it. The official said that it is a matter of great concern that the locust attack is taking place at a time when the country is facing an epidemic like corona.

Inspector General (Wildlife) in the Ministry of Environment, Soumitra Dasgupta said that it is the desert locust that has attacked India in large numbers. The locust party's arrival in India is a normal phenomenon, but this time the attack is huge and in number of lakhs, this locust party is attacking in different areas of the country. He told that there are quite large grasshoppers in these locust groups. Locusts of this species are found mainly in tropical regions. They have a greater ability to fly. These are the characteristics that run in large flocks only due to which much damage is done to crops.

According to the environment ministry, grasshopper parties are under attack in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh at this time. Of these, Rajasthan seems to be the most affected because these grasshopper parties have wreaked havoc in rural as well as urban areas. Crops have been spoiled by this, but even in the residential areas of urban areas, these locusts have caused a lot of damage.

Another official of the ministry said that the outbreak of locust parties is moving eastward which may increase the threat to food security. Dasgupta said that the environment ministry has no role in handling the outbreak of locust parties. This is a matter related to the Ministry of Agriculture and only the states concerned with the Ministry of Agriculture have to deal with it.
